Zomba Prison Project

About the band

In the summer of 2013, Grammy-winning producer and author, Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, The Good Ones) and his wife Italian-Rwandan filmmaker and photographer, Marilena Umuhoza Delli, travelled to Malawi’s maximum security Zomba Prison. The resulting debut album earned the first Grammy nomination ever for artists from the nation of Malawi. The prisoners' voices and stories made worldwide news including a front-page feature in the New York Times and an Emmy-winning segment on “60 Minutes” with Anderson Cooper reporting. Their success was followed by a second album and many of the prisoners gaining release as a result of the project.
